Microsoft Released WSUS (Windows Server Update Services)

On Monday, Microsoft shipped Windows Software Update Services (WSUS), the long-awaited upgrade to Software Update Services (SUS) that provides small and medium businesses with free software patching functionality. Based on the company's new Microsoft Update backend, WSUS will be joined in July by two related tools, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.0 and Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Inventory Tool.

Like Windows Update, Microsoft Update provides patches and updates for Windows products, but it also supports other Microsoft products, including Office and SQL Server.

Although there is no upgrade from SUS 1.0 to this new WSUS, you can migrate approvals and updates to WSUS. If you use multiple SUS servers to target updates to specific client computers, the WSUS migration tool enables you to consolidate approvals from specific SUS servers to WSUS computer groups.
