I am not the fun of Blackberry at all and never bothered to try understanding how it works until recently I was asked by one of my colleague who just recently purchased a new Blackberry and wanted to have it properly for both work and personal.
I used to set up a rule in the outlook that automatically forwards all incoming emails to the email address associated with the Blackberry but I realized this was totally WRONG after playing with the set up for a few hous. You should never need the @blackberry.net email address to get all emails transferred between the mail server and the Blackberry handheld because the whole idea works in a pull and push method which means that the service provider pulls the emails from your mailbox and pushes them onto your handheld afterwards for you.
If you want to connect your Blackberry with one of your personal email address, i.e. Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail, you can simply configure your Blackberry to use POP3 to pull the emails . If you are the corp user and would like to connect it with your corp mail server, i.e. Exchange server, you can configure it to pull the emails through OWA (Outlook Web Access). The nice thing about Blackberry is that you can have multiple accounts connected to one handheld and all get organized separately so you will never mess up your office emails with your personal emails.
The whole setup can be dramatically simplified by having a Blackberry Enterprise server installed in house. Any organization should have Express edition running internally when there are more than 5 handholds, and Enterprise edition when having between 5-15, and Enterprise edition on a dedicate server when having more than 15. The diagram below shows basically how the Blackberry Enterprise Server works.
Now I am getting serious now to think about having one. The whole idea of how emails get flowed and organized somewhat convinced me that the Blackberry IS something.
