Computer Workstation Ergonomics

My right shoulder has been sour for the last a couple of months and I didn't know why until recently I figured that it might be the way how my whole computer desk setup in my work was causing the pain.  I then ordered a nice keyboard tray that worthies almost $300 to low my keyboard and mouse so I don't have to hold and tense my right shoulder and arm all day long while I am at work.  Surprisingly, the pain on my right shoulder seems to be going away, it's getting better everyday.

Coincidentally, Jeff Atwood had a nice post, Computer Workstation Ergonomics, explaining in very detail how to achieve an ergonomically correct computer workstation, which basically was referenced from Microsoft Healthy Computing Guide claimed by himself as one of the best and most succinct references for ergonomic computing.  Here is the summary of the key guidelines which I hope you will find helpful:

1. Get a quality desk and chair that provide the required adjustability.  If you don't have the choice to pick the desk, try your best to get a better chair.

2. The top of your monitor should be at eye level, and directly centered in front of you. It should be about an arm's length in front of you.

3. Your desk surface should be at roughly belly button level. When your arms are placed on the desk, your elbows should be at a ~90 degree angle, just below the desk surface. The armrests of your chair should be at nearly the same level as the desk surface to support your elbows.

4. Your feet should be flat on the floor with your knees at a ~90 degree angle. Your seat should not be pressing into the back of your knees; if necessary, tilt it slightly forward to alleviate any knee pressure. Sit fully back in your chair, with your back and shoulders straight and supported by the back of the chair.

5. The last, when typing, your wrists should be in line with your forearms and not bent up, down, or to the side. Your keyboard should be directly centered in front of you. Other frequently used items should be nearby, within arm's reach.
